Local Family and Moderate Hikes/Camps

Annie's Canyon, Solana Beach

Annie's Canyon, Solana Beach

Annie's Canyon, Solana Beach

Annie's Canyon is a family friendly short hike near Solana Beach and I-5 with fun slot canyons and a climbing ladder. It's a little under 2 miles and elevation gain is under 500 feet. Although it's ok to take a pup on leash, climbing the ladder may be tricky for them. There is another route to the summit that does not require climbing the ladder. The views of the San Elijo Lagoon and ocean from the top are beautiful. It is part of the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve home to migrating birds.  It can be very crowded on weekends and later in the day. Best to get there early so you don't have to wait to traverse the slot canyons or ladder. Kids loved it!  The Hiking Guy's review is thorough and offers driving directions and pro tips .

Denk Mountain, San Marcos

Annie's Canyon, Solana Beach

Annie's Canyon, Solana Beach

I solo hiked up to the top of Denk mountain on Mother's Day. It was a pleasant and moderate hike. It is 3.6 miles out-and-back trail and was not crowded.  Elevation gain was 1040ft according to All Trails. The view of the ocean is beautiful. It is part of the Rancho La Costa Habitat Conservation Area. There were a few mountain bikers and trail runners and many bunnies on the morning I hiked it. Here is the link in All Trails.
