It has been my honor to serve you as an elected member of the Vallecitos Water District Board of Directors and I hope to continue that service.
My family and I moved to California in 2018. We looked all over San Diego County for a new home and are proud to have settled in San Marcos. The beauty of our preserved space, extensive trail system, and excellent public schools for our 4 children attracted us to the area. Professionally, I am a Ph.D. neuroscientist by training with a long career in strategic scientific and medical education communications.
I first became interested in water quality issues while volunteering for a Pennsylvania state senate campaign. Near my neighborhood, a naval and air force base had been conducting fire-fighting exercises with PFAS-containing foam for decades. The foam seeped into the groundwater contaminating many people's wells and primary sources for drinking water. Clean up continues at this EPA Superfund site.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or forever chemicals) are chemical compounds that have made many modern conveniences possible. But, an unintended consequence of their molecular indestructibility is that they have made their way into our water and bodies.
I was asked to run for the Vallecitos Water District Board in 2020 because folks believed I could offer a fresh, and scientific approach to how we govern our most precious resource. I took on that challenge with enthusiasm, focused on listening to the community about their water concerns, concentrated on educating people about our local water systems and what they Board does, and won by a wide margin.
I am asking for your support again to continue making progress toward a secure and sustainable future for our water.
What does that look like? 1) Secure Water: Ensuring our strategic vision is through the lens of climate change mitigation so our water remains safe and secure; 2) Sustainable Operations: Continuing to plan for our future by #Buildingthepeoplepipeline in water; 3) Sustainable Finances: disrupting unsustainable operations and adapting revenue streams for water independence.
